Virginia S. Lee, Ph.D. has twenty-five years’ experience working with educational organizations. She is President, Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education, the largest professional organization dedicated to faculty and educational development in higher education in the United States. She served as Associate Director, Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning, North Carolina State University. There she had lead responsibility for the design and implementation of
programs for faculty including a nationally recognized, campus-wide inquiry- guided learning program. She also played a leadership role in other university- wide reform efforts related to assessment and technology. Prior to joining NC State, Lee was Director, Graduate Student Teaching Programs, and Consultant, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. At both institutions she held visiting faculty appointments, teaching both undergraduate and graduate level courses and serving on dissertation committees.
In 2001-2004 Lee served as a member of the Core Committee, POD Network in Higher Education and also chaired the organization’s Publications Committee. She edited two essay series: Essays on Teaching Excellence and the "Thriving" column in the National Education Association (NEA) publication, the Advocate.
Lee has published and presented nationally on a variety of topics related to teaching and learning in higher education. She is the editor of Teaching and Learning through Inquiry: A Guidebook for Institutions and Instructors (2004; Stylus Publishing): the book documents many aspects of the inquiry-guided learning program at NC State. She serves on the editorial review boards of the Journal of Faculty Development, Innovative Higher Education, and To Improve the Academy. She has also been an invited speaker at a number of national conferences and seminars.
Earlier Lee held administrative positions with the American Montessori Society and the New York City Outward Bound Center. She also served as a small business adviser for Peace Corps/Sri Lanka and performed extensive volunteer work in adult literacy programs.
She holds a Ph.D. (Educational Psychology), UNC-Chapel Hill; M.B.A. (Management), Stern School, New York University; and B.A. cum laude (English Literature), Smith College.
